Turning Sticky Soil in Construction Waste Into Profit: How ALLU Solved the Problem

Shanghai, China

Material Wet clay mixed with construction debris (rebar, bricks, concrete blocks, stones)

Industry Construction, Soil Remediation

Application Soil recovery and aggregate separation

Function Screening, size separation, and decontamination

Model ALLU DH3-23 X75

Sticky soil is one of the most difficult materials to screen. Add rebar, broken bricks, concrete chunks, and other demolition debris, and most conventional screening equipment quickly struggles. Sticky-soil material can build up on and block a screening plant’s screen deck. The wet, clayish soil cakes onto screening surfaces, while the rebar can jam the mechanism. What should be a straightforward separation process turns into a constant cycle of stopping, cleaning, and restarting.

For one contractor processing heavily clay-contaminated construction waste in China, this was more than an operational inconvenience, it was a business problem. The material contained valuable resources: soil that could be sold for agricultural use and stone that could be processed and sold as aggregate. However, accessing that value first required to overcome the screening challenge.

Why Sticky Soil Stops Other Equipment

Static screens are prone to clogging, while vibratory screens can lose screening efficiency when sticky soil coats and blocks the openings. Even purpose-built screening attachments can struggle when wet clay is present. Fine particles adhere to the screen surface, bridge across the openings, and gradually restrict the flow of material. Operators spend more time cleaning the equipment than screening, so production falls; operating costs rise, and material remains in the stockpile.

The root cause is simple: much conventional screening equipment relies on gravity or vibration to keep the screen surface open. Neither method works effectively when the material tends to stick rather than fall freely.

The ALLU Difference: Screening Combs That Stay Clean

The ALLU screening bucket approaches the problem differently. Instead of using a flat screen deck, it uses rotating drums equipped with specially designed screening combs. As the drums rotate, the combs actively break up the material and move it through the screening openings.

The comb design helps prevent sticky soil and fine particles from building up on the screening surfaces. Material that would normally pack into a static screen is kept in motion as it passes through the rotating drums. The drums can also rotate in both directions, allowing the operator to reverse the flow and clear any buildup before it becomes a problem.

In this application, the result was immediate. Sticky soil passed through the bucket without caking onto the combs, while rebar and larger debris were screened out of the material. The bucket continued working shift after shift without the repeated cleaning stops that had affected previous attempts.

Making New Profit Streams

Where the contractor had previously been paying to haul material away, they were now generating income from both output streams. Maintenance was also straightforward: worn combs and blades could be replaced on site without special tools. ALLU Screening Buckets are designed to keep working – not to sit in the workshop.

“Other buckets couldn’t handle this wet clay soil. They’d clog in minutes. The ALLU runs all day. We’re selling soil we used to pay to dump. That’s the difference,” the contractor explained.

No additional equipment. No complicated processing line. Just one bucket, one excavator or loader, and material that can finally be recovered, separated, and turned into revenue.

EEM checks in with the team at remediation experts Enviropacific, who are putting a custom ALLU screening and crushing bucket from QLD Rock Breakers through its paces on a site in Western Sydney.

Enviropacific is a leading provider of environmentally-focused services to projects across Australia – from soil remediation to water and resource recovery.

“Enviropacific started approximately 22 years ago, in conjunction with Daracon Group, which is a company based out of Newcastle,” says Rodney Gray, Enviropacific’s National Plant and Fleet Manager. “And from there, it grew up and opened an office in Sydney. And now we’ve got offices in all the major cities in Australia. We now employ a staff of around 250.

“We specialise in site remediation, treatment of PFAS (per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances), asbestos and other hazardous waste management – basically any sort of remediation works.”

On any given job, the Enviropacific team typically utilises a range of machinery and attachments, including excavators and wheel loaders equipped with anything from hammers to shears. But Rodney points to the Enviropacific’s range of ALLU buckets as some of the most important attachments to its operations.

“We currently have six ALLU buckets in the fleet,” he says. “QLD Rock Breakers is our main to go-to supplier for these attachments – for anything from daily maintenance servicing to full overhauls. We’ve been dealing with them for seven or eight years now.”

Rodney says his team has stuck with QLD Rock Breakers for several reasons, a big one being the support coverage on offer.

“A lot of our work is in remote areas,” he says. “And QLD Rock Breakers services all those areas for us, and supplies us with local mechanics who can provide us with the service required to maintain the buckets.”

Custom care

QLD Rock Breakers, a subsidiary of machinery and excavator parts business RDW, is the exclusive dealer for ALLU products in Queensland.

“We supply a wide range of hydraulic attachments and products to the earthmoving industry,” says Peter Muirhead, After Sales and Service at QLD Rock Breakers. “We also have a full-service workshop with four dedicated service technicians, as well as capabilities for external servicing. And we carry an extensive range of parts and components for most makes and models of hydraulic attachments that we carry – from ALLU buckets to Simex rotary cutters to Rammer rock breakers, and more.”

Enviropacific recently took delivery of a customised ALLU TS Screener Crusher bucket, which was imported and assembled by QLD Rock Breakers before being carted down to NSW to work its magic in Western Sydney.

“It’s a standard ALLU bucket that we’ve imported from Finland, brought into our workshop, then dismantled and rebuilt it with an axe blade configuration to suit Enviropacific’s specific application,” Peter says.

The axe blade cutters were chosen in place of straight cutters to help the Enviropacific team deal with difficult clay material, and the results so far have been positive.

“We were having issues with other buckets getting jammed up, and we couldn’t meet production rates – but this new bucket is doing the job for us,” Rodney says. “The idea is the axe blade cutters pull the material through as opposed to letting it jam up in the bucket.”

Shaun Walshe, one of Enviropacific’s experienced and multi-skilled operators, has been trialling the new ALLU bucket on-site in Western Sydney, and says it has boosted their production dramatically. “This bucket will grind up rocks, concrete, anything at all – and we’re flying through it,” he says. “If it wasn’t for this bucket, I’d be using a sifting bucket on the end of an excavator, which would take us 10 times longer.”

Extra miles

Peter says QLD Rock Breakers and RDW place a great deal of importance on establishing relationships for the long haul – an ethos he says everyone working at the company buys into.

“RDW started in 1988, and we still regularly deal with customers we’ve had from the very start,” he says. “That’s something we’re very proud of, and all our employees are all on the same page. It’s a total earthmoving equipment solution that we provide – from the initial phone call to the aftersales support, servicing, and spare parts.”

For products crossing state lines, just like Enviropacific’s latest, Peter says an extended service network of ALLU dealers ensures a skilled and knowledgeable expert is never far away.

“Enviropacific has a national presence in pretty much every major centre in Australia, so they need to know their ALLU products will be looked after, wherever the job,” Peter says.

Rodney says the team at QLD Rock Breakers has repeatedly gone above and beyond in their support – especially important considering the sort of time-sensitive projects that Enviropacific undertakes regularly.

“I can’t really complain about the backup support from QLD Rock Breakers, to be honest with you,” he says. “There’s one older ALLU bucket that we’ve had in our fleet for probably eight years, a discontinued model, with very limited parts availability for it. We got it to Peter at QLD Rock Breakers, and he managed to source parts for us – even though a lot of the parts were discontinued – and do a complete rebuild.”

“So, a big thank you to them for keeping us going. A lot of the work we do is on airports, so it’s critical that we have continuation of work, and that our operations aren’t held up by an issue with our equipment.

“QLD Rock Breakers provides us with that service, and that limits our downtime.”

Soil Recycling Co. is at the forefront of soil screening in Australia, dedicated to promoting the reuse of soil as a valuable resource rather than disposing of it in landfills. This innovative company specializes in soil handling and recycling, collaborating with major waste management firms like ResourceCo to transform organic waste into usable products such as soil mixes for gardening and landscaping. Currently, Soil Recycling Co. is working at the South Gippsland Highway, Hampton Park in Victoria.

Founded in 2012, Soil Recycling Co. emerged from a passion for soil and organics, recognizing the inefficiencies in how materials were handled. The company saw countless trucks transporting soil and organic materials, only for them to return to the site soon after. This inefficiency sparked the mission to make onsite resources usable, eliminating unnecessary transport and fostering sustainable practices in the industry.

Chris Keay, the Director of Soil Recycling Co.

When Chris Keay, the Director of Soil Recycling Co., faced the challenge of processing wet, clumped soil that affected the performance of the Terex Ecotec Trommel, he recognized the necessity for a more effective solution. Two main issues arose due to the damp and wet soil:

    • Less aerated soil resulted in clumps clogging the hopper and Trommel.
    • The operator, Craig Jameson, had to clean the trommel multiple times a day, leading to significant downtime and fatigue, thus affecting productivity.

Initial attempts with another type of screening bucket featuring outdated drum technology failed to break down the lumps and dense soil, resulting in clogging and drastically reduced production. In search of a more reliable option, Chris Keay reached out to Walkers Hammers on September 16th, 2024, and discovered the innovative screening solutions from ALLU.

After reaching out to Walkers Hammers, Chris was introduced to Sami Rahman, the ALLU area sales manager based in Melbourne, Victoria. Together, they identified the ALLU DN 2-12 with TS 25 Axe as the optimal bucket for the demo. Sami, along with Carlo Costanzo from Walkers Hammers, prepared the rental bucket for a demonstration scheduled for September 17th. Upon arriving at the site, it became clear why the Trommel Screener had been struggling; persistent rain had saturated the soil, complicating the processing.

Once installed on the Hidromek excavator, the ALLU bucket quickly demonstrated its capabilities. The unique TS drum setup, designed for anti-clogging, optimal flow and self-cleaning, allowed for effective processing, leading to significant improvements in output. Impressed by its performance, Chris decided to keep the rental bucket for ongoing use, ensuring he had the right equipment to tackle his challenges effectively.

To further enhance productivity, the decision was made to switch from TS 25 to TS 50 blades, allowing for better fragmentation of larger soil lumps. Carlo from Walkers Hammers took the bucket back for the blade change, although it could have been done onsite. The bucket was delivered the next day with the blades changed to TS 50, ready for action.

    Operational Highlights:

September 18: ALLU bucket installed in the morning; processed 310 m³ of topsoil for the remainder of the day (measured from the monitoring system installed on the Terex Ecotec Trommel).

September 19: Next full day of operation with the ALLU bucket, processing 280 m³ of topsoil due to the poor weather with heavy rain.

September 20: To be able to compare the customer decided to use the GP bucket the full day which resulted in approximate 20% lower efficiency than the ALLU bucket, and required frequent cleaning due to clogging issues.

The following are production figures with ALLU and GP bucket after the demo/test:

In addition to enhancing productivity, the ALLU Variable Drum allows customers to bid on smaller jobs, reducing reliance on larger trommels. Immediately, the productivity of the Terex Trommel increased by 10-20% with the smaller ALLU rental bucket, and with the new purchased DN 3-12 TS VD further great efficiency is anticipated. This capability not only streamlines operations but also promises a quick return on investment, making it an attractive option for contractors looking to optimize their resources.

This collaboration highlights the strong partnership between ALLU and Walkers Hammers, reflecting our commitment to delivering efficient solutions. Together with Walkers Hammers and our valued customer, Soil Recycling Co., we are dedicated to providing sustainable solutions and efficient waste management.
