Effective backfill separation can hugely improve project quality, save costs and improve sustainability. Pioneers of this mechanical process, with the development of their ‘Padder’ machine in 1989, Ozzies specialised machinery is now used far beyond their headquarters in Phoenix, Arizona, including in Europe, South America, Australasia and the Middle East.

Yet, despite this success, the business still strives to deliver more for its customers. So when their own machinery couldn’t cover all the tasks on smaller projects, they turned to the Screening and Crushing Buckets manufacturer ALLU. As Head of Sales and Rentals at Ozzies, Travis Casper explains. “We wanted to expand our equipment offerings at Ozzies to help our customers with more solutions. ALLU’s quality products were the answer we were looking for.”

Complete accuracy on small projects

“Some of the smaller jobs didn’t make sense for our own backfill equipment,” Travis admits. “Padding buckets like ALLU’s have a great place in our market. They can place material more accurately, which is important in certain projects.” These include renewable energy, pipeline construction and maintenance, civil construction and water projects, all of which Ozzies uses ALLU machinery for.

To deliver a greener, more efficient operation on a customer site in Phoenix, Arizona, the Ozzies team combined their machinery with two ALLU products, including the DN 3-12 TS screening bucket. Fitted with 8 mm solar blades (16 mm, 25 mm, 35 mm blade thicknesses are also available), the team can separate and place 3/8″ minus material accurately and efficiently.

Travis says, “The ALLU buckets can produce this material all day long and within spec. Then it can easily place material directly into the trench. The efficiency and exact placement of material from the ALLU Transformer series buckets is unmatched.”

Maximum ease and efficiency

By combining material screening and processing capabilities in one machine, the ALLU Transformer D-Series Buckets help teams work more efficiently without having separate equipment on site. Alongside pipeline backfills, the buckets are suitable for material handling jobs such as compost aeration, landscaping and construction waste treatment.

A hydraulic attachment that can be fitted to excavators and loaders with a plug-and-play installation, the buckets screen, crush, aerate, mix, separate, feed and load materials in a one-step operation. Plus, as Travis explains, “Once the buckets and machines are set up with the proper delays, pressures and flows, it’s a pretty maintenance-free operation.”

The self-cleaning design minimises the likelihood of clogging and maximises capacity even with wet materials. With changeable blades and drums, the buckets can also be quickly adjusted for different tasks.

ALLU’s Variable Drum has a D-Series compatible frame and multiple ready-to-use drum sets. With individual shaft removal and a quick-locking two-bolt drum attachment system, different blade and drum types can be fitted or replaced without accessing the drive compartment. This makes maintenance and switching between screening and crushing tasks much more efficient, minimising downtime.

Similarly, ALLU’s Top Screen Rapid (TSR) blades make drum maintenance straightforward. Rather than opening the chain box and removing drums to change worn Top Screen (TS) blades, the two-piece structure of TSR blades means you can directly replace them on the shaft. Again, this cuts down on downtime significantly, reducing maintenance time by around two hours compared to standard blades.

With this mobile processing plant ready to take on customer sites, the team can deliver a project more efficiently, with a quality finish, while promoting sustainability and keeping costs low. With the ability to reuse leftover materials, less virgin product has to be purchased, transported to the jobsite or sent to a landfill. This cuts down on input costs, reduces fuel consumption and means waste materials are being recycled, which is great for Ozzie’s customers.

By connecting with ALLU, Ozzies have been able to take on more projects and better suit the needs of their customers. As Travis explains, “ALLU’s been a great partner for Ozzies and all our customers. They moved their headquarters to Nashville, Tennessee, which has been very helpful for us. To be centrally located and to deliver parts quickly and efficiently at a competitive price.”

In the small town of Pukavik in southern Sweden, Elleholms Maskin AB runs a tight ship. With nearly 80 employees and a heavy-duty fleet of over 30 excavators, 20 trucks, and a full suite of loaders and screeners, the company is one of the most active regional contractors in the area. Founded by Johannes Henriksson, the company has grown steadily by staying hands-on and taking on the work others passed up.


That mindset of staying hands-on and making things work is what led to their latest improvement at the recycling yard. The site handles everything the region’s construction sites throw at it: excavated soil, concrete rubble, stumps, tangled roots, and shredded wood. One truckload at a time, it adds up especially the incoming waste material, which used to grow into towering stockpiles before it could even be processed.

Challenge

For years, the company’s screener at the Elleholms yard was responsible for both clean soil and recycled waste material. But it couldn’t be in two places at once.


“We used to let the waste pile up until we had no choice but to deal with it,” the crew explains. “Sometimes it hit 10,000 cubic meters before we could even start sorting.”


This bottleneck took up valuable space on-site and tied up resources. On top of that, it interrupted the flow of higher-priority work like soil and gravel production. The problem wasn’t the volume — it was the timing. The incoming waste needed to be screened earlier, not later.

Solution

The team brought in an ALLU DN 3-17 screening bucket with TS08/16 drums. It’s now used to screen waste material immediately on arrival, without waiting for the main screener. Positioned right where the trucks unload, the bucket separates material at the source — freeing up space, simplifying logistics, and keeping the rest of the operation on track.


“We don’t have that massive pile anymore,” they say. “It’s under control now. And our main screener is always available for what it’s really meant to do — soil and gravel.”


The bucket also takes on the dirtier jobs like bark and tree stumps mixed with topsoil that aren’t ideal for fixed setups. It can even be taken to job sites, mounted on an excavator, to screen material directly on location.

Operational Use

The ALLU DN 3-17 is now a regular part of the workflow at Elleholms Maskin’s recycling yard. Instead of transporting material twice or delaying processing, the crew uses the bucket to break down and sort loads on the spot. It’s also used for small, irregular piles that aren’t worth starting up the entire plant for.


And the setup is flexible when needed, the bucket heads to jobsites and handles screening directly at the jobsite.

Thus, a dump truck can be filled up with fines because of screening, and oversize is fed into mobile crusher. To happen in one-cycle.  By doing so customer is utilizing his excavator as a sorting plant. In return, this helps to keep the costs down when it especially comes down to fuel and maintenance.

Gyproc S.p.A., part of the Saint-Gobain Group, needed a cost-effective way to crush and screen large volumes of plaster board waste without relying on high-maintenance crushers.

The Solution: ALLU Transformer D-Series – A Mobile, One-Step Approach

To replace the high-maintenance stationary crusher, Gyproc introduced the ALLU Transformer D-Series, specifically the DS 3-23 / XHD 40 equipped with long hammers on the center drum, mounted on their Volvo L110G wheel loader.

This upgrade enabled crushing, screening, and refining of plaster board waste in a single operation, eliminating the need for a separate crushing unit. With the ALLU D-Series, Gyproc:

In conventional pipeline projects, contractors often face a significant challenge: excavated material needs to be transported away while new backfill material must be brought in. This creates a complex logistical operation involving multiple trucks, increased traffic in residential areas, and substantial material costs. Drawing on their extensive experience in infrastructure projects, NCC’s team recognized an opportunity to approach this differently.

The larger DS4-12 bucket handled the main pipeline trenches, processing larger volumes of material efficiently. ALLU screening buckets transform contract crushing & screening business

When Leicestershire-based MRD Plant, which provides nationwide services to the UK recycling, construction, quarrying & mining sectors, first invested in a second-hand ALLU screening bucket just over a year ago, they quickly realised the benefits of this innovative Finnish-manufactured hydraulic attachment. Since then, they have added three new models to their machinery fleet, all supplied by dealers Blue Group.

“The ALLU screening bucket is so much more efficient, productive and less expensive than bringing a mobile crushing plant on to the work site…”

They were initially attracted to the ALLU DS 3-23 screening bucket after securing a series of relatively small crushing and screening contracts, as it was more cost-effective for their clients than employing an expensive mobile crusher on the job site. Earlier this year, they took delivery of a brand-new ALLU DH 4-17 model, primarily to process asphalt road planings that would otherwise end up in a landfill.

MRD Plant’s Managing Director, Tom Chapman, has nothing but praise for the ALLU transformer buckets, which can screen, crush, pulverize, mix, and separate a wide range of materials. If the material is particularly wet or dirty, they are far more efficient at processing it than a standard mobile screener.

Using the machine’s hydraulic system, the ALLU screening buckets—virtually converting your excavator or loading shovel into a mobile processing plant—are user-friendly and allow for quick attachment, ensuring easy control and operation. With interchangeable blades and spacings of various sizes, you can easily adjust the particle size to meet the different requirements of job sites.

“In many cases, an ALLU screening bucket is much more efficient, productive, and less expensive than transporting a mobile crushing plant to the work site. That’s something we began to realize when we invested in that second-hand model last year. Some of the contracts we secure now involve processing just a few hundred tonnes of material over a couple of days, and it would have been inefficient to set up a standard mobile crusher on-site.

Had we done that, we would still have to use a loading shovel to feed the crusher. The fact that we can fit an ALLU screening bucket to the shovel means we are literally halving our fuel costs and using less labour on-site,” said Tom. “As a result, we can pass those cost savings on to our clients, which they appreciate.”

The ALLU DH 4-17 screening bucket, one of the largest in the D-Series range, is specifically used by MRD Plant to process road planings. However, it can also screen and separate various other materials, including different soil types, sand, gravel, topsoil, compost, demolition waste, biomass, processing, and products of different fractions. This makes the D-Series suitable for various applications, including construction, excavation, recycling, landscaping, and agriculture.

More or less permanently fitted to a 35-tonne Hitachi Zaxis 350-7 excavator, the ALLU DH 4-17 screening bucket is in constant use.

”It essentially does the same job for less than a top-of-the-range mobile crusher,”

added Tom, who established MRD Plant in 2022 after working alongside his father in a similar business before it was sold in 2019.

”Apart from the versatility of the ALLU screening buckets, I was also attracted to them because of their simplicity. They are easy to use and much easier to maintain compared to a standard mobile crusher. Plus, being fitted to an excavator or loading shovel, they enable us to access restricted sites where we might not be able to bring in a separate crusher unit.”

The other three ALLU buckets in the MRD Plant crushing and screening division are fitted to two JCB loading shovels and a smaller Hitachi excavator. They are easily interchangeable to suit various applications. One of the ALLU transformer buckets has been used to break up and screen Pulverised Fuel Ash (PFA), also known as fly ash, which can then be partly used as a cement substitute in the manufacture of concrete blocks. Extremely wet PFA would be impossible to screen using a conventional mobile screener, and this material would normally end up going to landfill.

In just a few short years, Tom Chapman has built MRD Plant into a successful and growing contract crushing and screening operation that can take on projects ranging from small-scale work to larger, long-term contracts. In addition to the ALLU buckets, he currently operates two mobile crushers, three excavators, and five loading shovels.

PLANT HIRE DIVISION


The business also includes a plant hire division with an expanding fleet of excavators, loading shovels, mobile jaw crushers, and screeners, all available on either an operator or self-drive rental basis.

The plant hire division also offers a variety of ALLU transformer buckets, which are not only limited to aggregate processing but can also be used to meet the requirements of almost any application—from pipeline filling and compact soil processing to highway construction and asphalt recycling. These buckets serve a range of sectors, including quarrying and mining, and wood chip & biomass production.
